March Madness ~ Can Cuse Reach Final FOUR?

So SU just put on a beating on an overmatched SFA team. What does this mean? Well, SU was clearly the better team, but be weary folks if you think this game was telling of the rest of the tourney. SU has been playing great team ball lately, evident by winning 8 of their last 9, and the balanced scoring the team possesses.

SU however overpowered SFA, and the next round will clearly be more challenging. SU needs to do a few things right in the next game:

1) FEED THE BIGGS: AO and Jackson had impressive games against an obviously smaller SFA front line. But they have the bodies to battle down low with any front line, and they are skilled enough to hurt opponents a series of ways (AO has that sweet baby hook, Jackson showing some quick feet lately)

2) CUT THE TURNOVERS: you give opponents the ball more, they will score more, simple as that. SU was lucky SFA did not score more, as the CUSE committed 21 turnovers to SFA's 6. Yea, BIGG difference there, and a little troubling

3) Dont RELaX: SU looked tentative and relaxed in the 2nd half, a problem if they play a good team who catches fire. SU only won by 15 points, but they should have won by much much more!

SU has become a very trendy pick for the final four this year, and they have the pieces to do it for sure. They need to play smart, and getting Kristoff back for the next game will be a big plus. GO CUSE, let's show the nation this team is for real!

Can SU beat UCONN?

Call me crazy, call me the worlds biggest optimist, but I think they can pull out this game against UCONN. Here's how I look at it:

1) Make use of your perimeter game. SU has some great shooters from downtown and they all (Andy, Devo, Flynn especially) need to be able to knock don some jump shots and get the game going from the arc.

2) REBOUND -- for crips sakes give yourselves a fighting chance please! This is the one thing with the zone I don't like is there are so many holes for the defense to give up offensive boards, something they can't do against UCONN. The Orange have to keep the 2nd chance point to a minimum, and gobble up as many as they can. Tall task I know, but the Orange have some big bodies (AO can clear space, Harris is a beast at 6-4) they can pound with.

3) MIX up the Defense a bit. This won't happen unless the Orange get down big, but how about rotating between some full court press (not heavy, just some ball pressure with Johnny), some straight up man and then use the zone? I like zone D, I really do considering the Orange need to conserve energy for their Offense attack. Put UCONN on their heels a little and force them into mistakes!

4) This is important -- try and get Thabeet into foul trouble early and often. AO and Jackson can battle, put the pressure on UCONN to play D without the nation's best Defensive player. This way, the Orange slashers can get in the lane and do their thing within the arc too!

5) DON'T PLAY LAZY DEFENSE! This is simple but needs to be said. This leads to bigg deficits, and how have those turned out lately?

I think SU can pull out this game, they are a good team that has the talent, but they don't play well enough to show it. If they play the way they played against ND, WVU, Memphis and KU, they can do this!

SU - Nova Halftime Report

53-38 at halftime, and SU only has 9 fgs! Rick Jackson has 6! It's amazing that SU has attempted 25 Free throws, but luckily they've completed 16 or 17 and that has kept them withn striking distance for the 2nd half. They just had a good point in the halftime report:

"If you wanna play well, don't play like Syracuse," whoever the comentator is today.

How in the world does Johnny Flynn not touch the ball on the last possession of the half?

Will SU get smart enough to put someone beside AO on Cunningham? He has 18pts shooting 7-8 from the field- mostly jumpers over AO's ailing knee. (Is that the answer for anyone to beat UCONN??  YES!)

SU needs some picked up D, they're being lazy. It's only 15, SU has great outside threats and if they stay awake, they can pull this off. This is BIGG!

SU -- WV Recap

The Orange finally compiled a good game against the Mountaineers to maitain their winning streak in the Dome against WV (dating back to 1996). Paul Harris was Paul Harris tonight, with some 14pts and 13 boards, although he was most active in the first half where he nearluy had a double double early on.

I'm a little concerned about AO and Andy Rautins, although yo could tell their presence was felt. AO pushed people around a bit early while he could go, even if he did only score 4pts he was a presence.

I would like to send my props to Kristof Ongenaut. No, he doesn't score a lot of point and I've seen message boards light up about his inability to play with the big boys in the BE. People, he started most of the games last year and pretty much all the games in BE play, he knows how to battle. He doesn't score but that what he does, battle. I saw a block shot tonight that was Hakim Warrick'esk from the '03 championship. I like this guy and like him off the bench, he's energy!

Also, my player of the year ballot goes to Johnny Flynn ... plain and simple he leads this team and is the catalyst for one of the highest scoring teams in Basketball. He can do no wrong!

Until next time ... GO CUSE!!!

New time upon us ...

Here's a few thoughts for my first piece ... You see my favorite teams, theres a trend here folks - ORANGE AND BLU. Honestly, I used to be a Knicks fan, but that's just frustrating!

I'm looking for the CUSE to get back to their winning ways tonight against WV ... and they'll make the push they need to get a prime seed in The Madness ... Johnny Flynn and Paul Harris and the 00ne Rick Jackson will be in full force tonight ... MORE AFTER THE GAME ... GO CUSE!

Opening day is only a couple months away and I may start to do a season long Mets blog, keep up with me here!
